Canadian Federation of Humane Societies CFHS believes that the acquisition of an animal should be a deliberate and conscious decision to influence the future well-being of the animal. CFHS is therefore opposed to the awarding of any live animal as a prize or unsolicited present.
Animal Control By-law Watch
On October 9 2002 Ottawa City Council accepted & approved the Emergency and Protective Services Committee Report 26 which recommended:WHEREAS psittacines (parrots, cockatoos, macaws, etc.) are commonly kept as companion birds;
AND WHEREAS the first bullet in Appendix A would in fact preclude the keeping of certain species of psittacines which are on the CITES list;
AND WHEREAS the keeping of these types of birds is reasonable and their acquisition controlled through CITES;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Appendix A be amended to provide an exception for species of the Order Psittaciformes;
AND THAT staff review item 1 of Appendix A to provide for appropriate exceptions for other birds as identified by the Aviculture Advancement Council of Canada and other bird breeding organizations, and to review these species in the context of animals/birds in entertainment as necessary.
Which means that all of our points have been recognised! Congratulations and many, many thanks to all those who made this possible through the letter-writing campaign and presentations to committee on Sept 23rd 2002. - Mike Anderson
